HILLS LIKE WHITE ELEPHANTS

'' Describe your feelings about the character''

In Hills like white elephant, two people discuss the matter of abortion: the American, a man we now very little about, and Jig, his partner, a young woman who, apparently, is pregnant. My favorite character of the story is Jig, She impresses me very much. She is, in her way of being and in the comments she adds to the story, the most interesting character. She seems to be evolving throughout the story. She seems to be, or she tries to evolve. In contrast with her partner, she wants more out of life than what she has and what she always wanted. She is bored of being what she is—a hedonistic girl, part of a couple she can’t even see a future to, and looks to what else there is to life, in the present case, maybe a child. She is bored, and you feel it in everything she says. By mentioning that everything she tries for the first time, everything she ever dreamed of doing and everything she used to take pleasure in, tastes like licorice, a common and flat taste, she is establishing that very emotion of boredom and is able to connect us to her. And just the character, without even considering the words she says, is an interesting character. Her name, Jig, is a slang word for sex which is quite relevant in the story as she first appears to us as a fun woman whose life revolves around pleasure. But, in the end, we realize that her longing for something more is deeper than anything else; she wants to start an adult life, she wants to be responsible. A quality I personally admire in a character.

Hills Like White Elephants

This controversial story begins with two travelers waiting for their departure at a train station in the Ebro River valley of Spain. The two principal characters are described as the American and Jig, a nickname that the American gave her, known as his younger female companion. (23) While waiting for the train to Madrid, they ordered liquor called Anis Del Toro and a couple of other drinks to pass the time. The conversation between the two characters gradually became a subject about an operation, more like (17) an abortion that the couple has to decide about (18) for the (18) future (24) without explicitly stating it. (23) The American tried to convince Jig that she should do it because in his point of view, children are costly and difficult to raise. He thinks (18, 11) that he isn't (11) ready for children yet and he would like (18, 11) to be free. (23) In addition, one fact about the nickname that he gave to Jig was that this name is (11) a slang term used for sexual (17) intercourse. (23) We could basically understand that the American is (11) not serious in (18) their current relationship. On the other hand, Jig is (11) trying to wonder (18) if she would (17) want (11) to settle down and have children (24) since this unexpected pregnancy happened, (23) or just have an abortion and skip the (17) motherhood because she is still young. (23) At the end of their long, (24) conversation and argument (17), Jig gave in and stopped talking about it. The American, however, was unsure about Jig’s intentions and drank alone before carrying their baggage to the platform. The story then ends (10) by Jig assuring the American that she is (11) “fine” and ready to go.

"Write a letter to the author or a character"...says Mr. Bonk

My dearest Jig,

I will start this letter by saying to you that even if sometimes things get out of control in our (18) life, there is always a (17) light at the end of the dark road.(23) I have not been in your exact situation, but I know that the decision you have to make is incredibly difficult. Although, there is one thing you need to know : you are a wonderful young woman that is worthy of a man that could (11) stay with you throughout any situation – in the best and the worst times¬ (23). Also, you need to take some moments (18) alone with (18) yourself to rethink about (17) your life right now. Is this really what you want ? To be with a man that cannot accept a child that is rightfully his ? You two are not at the same level of maturity in the (18) relationship, as (17) I have noticed.(19) Your boyfriend, in comparison with (18) yourself (18), has a tendency to be more free-spirited, (24) and is not yet ready to become a father. In my opinion, Jig, you need to wait or to find a loving, caring man that could save you from a certain poverty (23). The two only (19) options that you have about (18) the pregnancy are both (17) crucial in (18) deciding about the way your life will turn out in the future. (23) No matter how much you think you love your boyfriend, you still should not base your decision upon his judgment, nor be influenced, moved by his soft words (23). Think well, before acting (23)-- it is a decision that will have effects on your heart for the rest of your life. From the (18) experiences that I've seen (17) in other situations similar to yours, a wrong choice can result in a lifetime of tearful and sleepless nights.

Be careful with what you do (23) and I wish you love as well as happiness (23).

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Moreno
